Just One Thing for January

Keeping up with everything you’re supposed to be doing can be overwhelming. To help, we’re starting a new program here called “Just One Thing.”

Every month we’ll give you one thing to do, just one thing, that will help organize or improve your finances. It’s a place to start if you don’t know where to start and we’re keeping it simple.

First up for January is to create a file for tax documents. While the tax filing deadline isn’t until April, you’ll probably start getting tax documents in the mail about now (if you haven’t already.) Creating a file for those statements you get in the mail is a simple task that will make doing your taxes later so much easier when everything you need is in one place. You may get some via email as well, so creating a digital folder (on your computer desktop or in a cloud service like Google Drive or Dropbox, or even just a folder in your email) is a good idea too.

We’ve got a short article here on what documents to watch out for, but if you don’t have time for that right now just go get a folder and put it somewhere you’ll remember. That’s its, that’s your one thing for January.
