Our second entry in the Financial Myths series is also about credit. Have you ever heard that checking your own credit report can hurt your credit score? We wouldn’t be surprised if you had, it’s a common piece of advice that gets passed along. And it’s completely untrue. Checking your own credit score, or pulling your own credit report does NOT lower your credit score. There are different types of requests to view credit reports and some requests do lower your score, so it’s an understandable mistake. But checking your own report not only doesn’t hurt your score, it can help you spot and remove mistakes (they happen) or catch fraudulent credit accounts opened in your name early before they do too much damage.
